AI models know your brand. They won’t recommend it.

A new report landed this week from The Tennessean that explains a crucial problem for Shopify brands (The Tennessean, “AI Models Know Your Brand. They Just Won’t Recommend It.”, July 10, 2026). AI models, like ChatGPT, know your brand exists. They’ve crawled your site. They have the data. But they simply will not recommend it when a buyer asks a question.

Think about that for a second.

It’s not an ignorance problem. It’s a choice problem. The AI is making a decision to surface other brands, or to give a generic answer, even if your product is a perfect fit. They know you, but they’re not choosing you.

This is the AI visibility gap. It is costing Shopify brands real money every day.

Your customer asks ChatGPT for the best running shoes for trail use. The model has seen your new trail runner line. It knows your specs. But it decides to recommend Brand X, or it provides a general list of features to look for. Your brand, unseen.

This is why traditional SEO for AI answers is a longer game than most people realize. It’s not just about being found. It’s about being preferred. The AI’s internal algorithms, its Contextual Relevance Score (ChatGPT Ads’ equivalent of Quality Score), these are all making decisions on what to surface.

But there is a direct route to being preferred. A way to bypass the organic preference gap.

ChatGPT is the new channel. A buyer asks. The model answers. The buyer decides inside the conversation. The buyer purchases. This channel converts around double the rate of anything else you run right now. You’re not on it yet. It’s still cheap.

I run ChatGPT Ads for Shopify brands. It gets your brand into the answer when the buyer asks, directly. You move past the organic ranking challenge. You get your brand in front of that buyer at the moment of intent.

Here’s a small action to take today: ask ChatGPT for a recommendation in your product category. For example, “What is the best custom dog collar for large breeds?” Does your brand show up? If not, you’re missing out on the best channel to find buyers ready to convert.
