ChatGPT Ads Are Moving Past Text

ChatGPT ads are starting to look more like a real paid channel. OpenAI’s current ad page says advertisers can create campaigns, upload ad details, measure results, and run ads while people compare choices and make decisions in ChatGPT (OpenAI Ads, “Advertise in ChatGPT,” 2026).

That matters for Shopify operators already running Google or Meta. This is not a future channel anymore. OpenAI opened beta self-serve Ads Manager and CPC bidding on May 5, which means advertisers can sign up, set budgets, upload ads, launch campaigns, and pay when someone clicks (OpenAI, “New ways to buy ChatGPT ads,” May 5, 2026).

The next change is visual. Digiday reported that OpenAI has tested a larger image format, optional call-to-action buttons, and a dedicated commerce format that can show shopping data like price and customer reviews (Digiday, “OpenAI gives ChatGPT ads a visual upgrade,” May 21, 2026). Digiday also reported that OpenAI job listings point to text, image, video, native, conversational, and interactive ad formats being worked on (Digiday, “OpenAI looks beyond a single ad format with image, video and conversational ads in the works,” July 1, 2026).

For a Shopify brand, this changes the prep work. A text ad can survive with a clean claim. A visual ad needs product shots, proof shots, and short demos that answer the buyer’s question inside the conversation.

Take a dog bed brand. If the buyer asks ChatGPT for a washable dog bed for a large dog, a plain ad can say “machine washable orthopedic dog bed.” A stronger visual ad shows the cover being removed, the foam thickness, the size next to a large dog, and the review proof that backs the claim.

This is where most Shopify brands will be lazy. They will upload the same Meta square, the same Google Shopping image, and the same homepage copy. That might run, but it will not match the way a buyer uses ChatGPT.

The buyer is not scrolling. The buyer is asking. The ad has to answer the question with proof fast.

OpenAI’s Ad Tools Terms also say OpenAI may make AI creative tools available to generate, modify, transform, localize, or translate ad creatives, but advertisers are still responsible for checking claims, prices, product details, testimonials, and compliance before using them (OpenAI, “Ad Tools Terms,” 2026). In plain English: the tool may help make ads, but you still own the mistake if your ad lies.

Do this today. Pick one product you already spend money on. Make a small folder with five assets: clean product image, product-in-use image, proof image, 10-second demo, and a plain claim with the source behind it. That folder is your first ChatGPT Ads creative kit.
